In an official announcement from the Prime Minister's Office on Sunday, it was revealed that Prime Minister Narendra Modi is scheduled to inaugurate the long-awaited Howrah Maidan-Esplanade section of the Kolkata Metro next week. Additionally, the release stated that PM Modi will also inaugurate two other crucial sections of the metro: Kavi Subhash-Hemanta Mukhopadhyay and Taratala-Majerhat.
During his forthcoming visit to Telangana, Tamil Nadu, Odisha, West Bengal, and Bihar from March 4-6, PM Modi will focus on enhancing urban mobility, with a particular emphasis on inaugurating the Kolkata Metro's Howrah Maidan-Esplanade section as part of the East West Metro corridor.
Furthermore, PM Modi will launch the Kavi Subhash-Hemanta Mukhopadhyay metro section of the Kavi Subhash-Airport line and the Taratala-Majerhat section, which forms part of the Joka-Esplanade line.
Of notable mention is that the Howrah Maidan-Esplanade metro section features the first transportation tunnel beneath any mighty river in India. This tunnel traverses under the River Hooghly, with Kolkata and Howrah cities situated on the east and west banks, respectively.
Highlighting the engineering feat, the release also stated that the Howrah metro station ranks as the deepest metro station in India. This series of inaugurations marks a significant milestone in the ongoing development of Kolkata's metro infrastructure, promising improved connectivity and mobility for the city's residents and visitors alike.
